Black swirling ornamental ankle tattoo

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A bold black linework design of flowing, curling strokes and small dots winds up the ankle from the top of the foot. The lines are solid and uniform with no shading, and the design has no colour. The photo is taken close up against a dark blurred background, with the foot angled to show the full length of the piece.

Mrs Okonedo's sign shop smelled of turpentine and cold tea, and the flourishes were the only thing she trusted Ivo to do alone. He had come to her at sixteen with a box of brushes from a car boot sale and no idea how to load a quill with enamel. She showed him first on scrap tin: the long pull that starts thin, swells, and tapers back to nothing, the way a stream runs out of a hill.

By March he could do it without thinking. The narrowboat painters down at the basin wanted their names curled in black, with dots spaced like stepping stones beside the scrollwork, and Ivo took their orders on a clipboard that never stayed dry. Mrs Okonedo kept a single sheet pinned above the bench, a pattern she had drawn in 1979 and never once copied exactly. "Every curl is a decision," she told him. "Make it once and you can make it forever."

The job that mattered came in the last week of November, a hearse-black Austin needing its door panel done before a funeral. The family wanted nothing rigid, only motion. Ivo worked the brush until his wrist ached, lines doubling back on themselves, dots placed where his breath stopped. When he stood back, the panel looked like weather moving across water.

Mrs Okonedo ran a thumb along one edge, found nothing to fault, and said only, "Now you sign it." He hesitated, then drew the smallest curl in the corner, a tail that looped back under itself and disappeared. Nobody would see it but him.
