Mornings at the rank outside Alder Street station start with the same argument between the signs. Broadway points one way, Rodeo Drive the other, and the One Way plate above them has faced the wrong direction since spring. You stopped correcting tourists months ago. You just tap the clipboard and tell them the cabs go where the arrow tells them, which is almost never where they want to be.

On Thursday a woman in a yellow raincoat asks for Sunset. It hasn't rained in four months, but she's dressed for it anyway. You tell her Sunset is the long road past the palms, forty minutes if the lights are kind. She shows you a photograph on her phone of a house with a blue door and asks whether you know it. You don't. You fold the phone back into her hand and tell her the house is probably still there, which is the kind of thing people want to hear.

Her cab pulls away. Then the departures board clicks over to a train nobody scheduled, the platform empties, and the pigeons go quiet on the awning. You walk out under the palms to the kerb and look up at the plate properly for the first time in weeks. Someone bolted it on upside down, so from the station side the arrow points straight at the doors.

You climb the ladder with a spanner from the cab office and turn the sign round. It takes ten minutes. When you come down, the first driver in the queue is already reading it, and for once he laughs.
