Sunflower, rose and elephant on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A forearm sleeve shows a sunflower near the elbow, a rose with leaves below it, and an elephant head framed by a mandala-style ornamental border towards the wrist. The linework is bold and the shading is built up in greys and blacks to give the petals and the elephant's head depth. The tattoo fills most of the frame against a soft white fabric.

The sunflowers on Deck Nine have started turning towards the wrong lamp again, and Mother Okonkwo says it is my fault for talking to them. I tell her a plant follows whatever is warm and bright, same as anybody. She laughs, which is how I know she has already decided to let me keep the bed.

The rose bed is older than the ship's last census. Ruth Ahn planted the first cutting in a biscuit tin the year the hull sealed, and it has never been allowed to seed, only to bloom for the dead. When Tomas went out through the lock, we cut a single bloom and set it in the ring of the hatch, and the leaves beneath it went black at the edges the way his letters used to.

The elephant is only ink. Nobody aboard has seen one, though Ruth swore she had, in a village beside a river that no longer runs. Her grandmother drew it on her forearm to keep off bad weather, and the ornament around it counts the days to the next dock. I trace the border with a thumbnail every shift, one curl for each harvest we have not lost.

Yesterday the seedhead turned round at last, nodding past the grow-lamp to the viewport where the dark sits thick with stars. I have never seen anything so stubborn and so certain. I cut it, dried it on the sill, and when the girl from Deck Two asked what it was for, I told her it was for planting somewhere else.
