Lotus and dotted chain tattoo design
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
Two near-identical panels show a lotus flower at the centre, with pointed petals and a dense cluster of dotted strands hanging beneath it. The lower panel adds more curling tendril-like linework and flourishes to the sides. The drawing is in black ink only, set against a warm beige, aged-paper background.

The old women of Haldane Row said the lotus came up through the coal dust the spring after the Brackley fall, and nobody had planted it. Maggie Tulley found it on the tip at first light, white and clean in all that grey, its petals pointed like lamp flames. Hanging beneath the bloom was a string of dark seeds, round and wet, threaded on lines so fine they looked as if a careful hand had dropped them there.

Her brother Dan had been on the night shift when the roof came in. Nine men went down and four came up, and the names of the nine were chalked on the chapel door where the women could read them. Maggie went to the tip every morning after that. Each day the flower sent another tendril down the slope in long loops, and each day there were more seeds, as though the plant kept its own count of who was still below.
In the third week Mr Ashworth came up from the office with two labourers and a crowbar. The company wanted the tip levelled for the new drift, he said, and a weed was a weed. Maggie stood on the path with her hands in her apron and told him the seeds were names. He laughed, but the labourers looked at the chalk on the chapel door and set the crowbar down.
They dug round the roots anyway, because it was the work they had been paid for, and when the soil gave way they found a length of old pit chain wound tight about the stem, black with age. Maggie lifted it out, and the seeds rattled against the links like a shift being called. She threaded one back onto its string, went home, and washed the coal from her hands.
