Ornate mandala design with feather motifs
Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows a symmetrical mandala built from a central star, layered petal and feather shapes, and radiating geometric bands. Fine ink linework outlines each element, with stippled dotwork shading creating soft grey gradients across the lower feathers. The image is rendered in black ink on a pale background, and the design fills the frame from the top edge down to the feather tips.

The mule stopped for the fourth time before the sun reached the ridge, and Ada Corran did not argue with it. Feathers lay in the ditch on either side of the track, grey and white, laid down in fans as neat as a hand of cards. Her grandmother had called them the road's receipts. You took one for every mile you were given, and you left one for the next traveller who needed to know the way was still there.

Past the salt pan the road split into three tracks that looked the same in the heat. Ada unfolded the sheet from her coat, the drawing her brother had made in pen before he went north. A star sat at the centre, petals spread out in rings, and feathers hung from the lowest edge like the fringe of a shawl. She had always thought it was a map of nothing. Now she turned it so the feather tips pointed at the ground and saw that they all leaned toward the middle track.
The middle track ran through a cutting where the wind had carved the rock into ridges, each one banded like the drawing. At the end of it stood a well with a stone rim worn smooth, and beside it a tin cup chained to a post. Ada drew water, filled the cup, and offered it to the mule first, as her grandmother had taught her, then poured the rest onto the dry ground for whoever came after.
When she finally found her brother, he sat by a fire with no fuel left, and he looked up as if he had been counting her steps. She took the last feather from her pocket and laid it on the rim of the well beside the cup. You kept the receipts, he said. She nodded. The mule drank, and the star on the sheet in her hand seemed, for once, to point somewhere she could reach.
