Ornate lotus flower design in two versions
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows two versions of an ornate lotus flower design with symmetrical petals filled with swirling filigree and spiral motifs. The left version uses clean brown outlines with white petals, while the right uses solid dark ink with stippled dotwork shading. Small circles and dots run vertically above and below the flower, all set against a mottled sepia background.

The rose came down in pieces on the Tuesday, and Mr Harrow swore at it the way he swore at weather. You knelt on the dust sheet with a chisel no wider than a wren's beak and worked the whitewash out of the petals one ridge at a time. Under four coats of lime the plaster was still crisp. Lotus, he said, not rose. Some plasterer in 1861 had wanted India on a Brighton ceiling, and nobody since had had the nerve to scrape it back.

The filigree was the hard part. Each spiral had to be opened clean, a curl inside a curl, and the stipple along the outer petals was where the original man had pressed a pin into wet lime, dot by dot. You could feel how long each one had taken in the flat of your thumb. You counted them without meaning to. Three hundred and eleven on the left petal alone. Harrow timed you with his pocket watch and said nothing when you overran.
On the Friday the small spiral at the heart of the bloom came loose in your hand, and behind it, pencilled on the lath in careful copperplate, were eleven sets of initials and a date. None of the names meant anything to you. Each man had cut one curl into the flower and gone back to his own trade. You took the pencil from your apron, wrote your own letters beside the last, and pressed the spiral home with the heel of your hand before the lime could take.
Harrow found it on Monday when he came to check the work. He ran a finger round the curl and stopped. For a long while he said nothing. Then he wound his watch, told you to put the kettle on, and reached for the lime bucket himself.
