Brother Tenzin counted them the year the roof came down. Forty-one dots from the gate to the shrine, and at each one he was to set down one worry. He did not. He carried every one up the hill tucked in his sleeve, and by the thirty-third he could not lift his arm.

Think of the spiral at the top, the one that curls like a sleeping dog's tail. That is where the path folds back on itself. The old abbot said every climber reaches that place, where the road seems to end inside your own thinking. Tenzin sat down there for three days. On the third morning a goat came up the path with a bell round its neck, walked straight through him as if he were a gatepost, and he laughed so hard he forgot his sleeve.

Now the lotus. It grows out of the mud at the bottom of the pond, pushes through the black water into the sun, and when it opens it is clean. Tenzin painted one on the temple wall that spring, and the petals were so careful that the novices said it looked wet. He never once asked whether anyone could see the mud underneath it.

The last dot sits below the flower. Tenzin always said that one was for the feet. Go on, touch the wall where the paint has faded. Feel how cool the stone is. That is enough for tonight.
