Purple-shaded lotus flower with a black Om symbol and swirls above it, tattooed on the upper chest near the collarbone.

Lotus and Om symbol on the upper chest

Botanical · Chest · Colour · Photo

A small lotus flower with black outlines and soft purple shading sits beneath a black Om symbol flanked by curling swirl lines. The linework is clean and fairly bold, with the purple wash given a gentle, graduated fill across the petals. The design is centred on the upper chest with plenty of surrounding skin, against a dark top at the bottom of the frame.

The sluice at Harrow Drain had been shut since May, so the water stood still enough for Maud Ellery to see her own reflection in it, which she did not care for. Instead she watched the flat green pad that had appeared by the reed bed, round as a coin, and wrote it in the book beside the gauge readings: one leaf, Tuesday.

Her nephew Sunil, home from the depot in Peterborough, said it was a water lily gone wild and the council would want it cut. He had brought a paper bag of dried seed pods from a shop in Leicester that sold them for incense, and had tipped them off the footbridge out of kindness, not knowing what he was doing. Maud had never grown anything that did not come with a row of hoes beside it.

By August the flower opened pale pink at the centre, and each morning it sat on the water with its petals folded back like a careful hand. Maud took to sitting on the bridge with her tea. Sunil came on Sundays and sat beside her and asked no questions, which was why she let him stay. The council man came with a scythe and stood a long while looking, then went away without cutting.

On the last day of the month she wrote: level steady, sluice open, one bloom. Underneath, she wrote the thing she had not planned to write, that the water had kept its own counsel all summer and so had she. The flower closed at dusk. She left the book open on the sill for the wind to read.
