A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Old Marrow kept his booth at the far end of the Michaelmas fair, where the lamps gave out and the mud took over. Every year he laid out the same three things on a board draped in grey wool: a brass ring worn thin on one side, a cloth folded into a triangle with its corners pinned, and a length of ash no longer than a forearm, with a single pale line scored down its middle. Nobody bought them twice, and nobody asked what they were for.

Hannah Coyle came up the lane the last night of the fair, her boots split at the toes and her purse light, and asked what the ring cost. Marrow said it cost a day she had not yet lived through. She laughed and said she had plenty of days. He shook his head and pushed the ash across the board toward her, and she picked it up because it was warm from the stove.

She carried it through the wet fields to the river, where the ferryman was asleep under his coat. She sat on the bank and turned the wood in her hands until the pale line caught the moonlight. Then she drew the cloth from her pocket, folded it three ways, and dropped it into the water. The ring followed. When she stood up, the mud on her boots had dried and the wind had gone out of the willows.

At the next Michaelmas the booth was there again, but the board held only the wool. Marrow said the ring had been paid for, and that Hannah Coyle had gone home with the long wood and no need of anything else.
