Lotus flower outline design
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A bold black outline drawing of a lotus flower on white paper. A central upright petal is flanked by two pairs of outer petals that curve outwards, with a curled base, a small dot at the centre and teardrop shapes beneath. The linework is a uniform thick marker stroke in black with no shading or colour, and the design is centred in the frame.

He had been asked to make the lotus for the lid of the reliquary, the one the abbot said must look as though it had opened itself at dawn. Anselm had laughed at that, but now, with the lamp dying, he understood he had been drawing the mud all along and not the flower.
He lifted the brush and let the last stroke fall where it wanted: a single dot at the heart of the bloom, heavy as a drop of rain. Then he sat back. The wick sputtered and went out. In the grey before Lauds, the page held the shape of the flower, black and certain against the paper, and the reliquary lid was already waiting for it on the bench.
