Nell had been told the pattern book was closed for the year, so she painted the lotus anyway, on the back of a rejected saucer, in the hour before Walter locked the kiln shed. Her hand knew the shape well enough by then. The centre petals she outlined with the finest nib in the tin, and the outer ones she filled with the little lattice the old master called lace, each cell no wider than a grain of rice.

Beneath the flower she ran a column of dots and rings down toward the foot of the saucer, the way the stencil ran down the spine of every teacup at the Garrod works. Ruth at the next bench said it looked like a plumb line dropped into still water. Nell said it looked more like rain going down, and Ruth laughed and said that was the trouble with Nell, she could never leave a thing alone.

The glaze came out of the kiln with a hairline crack through one petal, so the saucer went to the seconds shelf, where a shilling bought anything you could carry. Three weeks later a letter arrived at the works addressed to the painter of the lotus. It had been bought by a widow in Leek, who wrote that she had used it every morning since, and that the crack had turned out to be the part she liked best, because it let the light in.

Nell read it twice at the bench, then folded it into her apron pocket and reached for the nib. She had a plate to finish before the bell, and she thought she might try a second lotus with a crack already drawn in.
