A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The seed pod had come up in Ada's coat pocket from Canton, carried home by a brother-in-law who had gone to sea at fourteen and never once written. She set it on the windowsill above the sink in Carr Row and forgot it until the pit whistle sounded and the coal dust got into everything, the bread included. By the time she remembered it, the pod had split at the top, and the little holes in its crown were pale and round as pennies.

Her son Sam worked the face at Hollin Pit, and on the Tuesday the cage stuck at four hundred feet he came home with a cut across his cheekbone and no words for what he had seen. Ada filled the tin bath in the yard with rainwater, pressed the seeds into the mud at the bottom, and laid the pod in the middle like a ship's bell on a sandbank. The neighbours thought her soft in the head. The colliery men walked past with their lamps and did not look twice.

Nothing rose for nine days. On the tenth morning there was a leaf the size of a thumbnail, folded tight as a fist, and by the Sunday it had opened into a plate of green so broad that rainwater sat on it in beads. Sam stood at the back door with his tea going cold and watched the water roll off without wetting a thing. He asked what it was called. Ada said nobody had told her, only that it grew out of mud and kept itself clean.

The cage came up that afternoon with every man on it. Ada did not go to the pit head. She stayed by the bath, and when Sam came through the gate she was already lifting the dried pod out to show him, its crown pierced with neat dark cups, each one still holding its seed.
