Lotus flower tattoo design sketch
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows a lotus flower with pointed petals layered around a central bud, with small circles and dots scattered at the sides. A curling spiral stem with a few dots descends from the base of the flower. It is drawn in black ink with clean, even linework and areas of hatched shading at the centre, on a plain white background.

The brothers at Saint Oswin's said the lotus in the mill pond had come from a seed carried across three counties in a monk's sleeve. It bloomed once each summer, and only for those who knelt to look at it before the bells.

Wren Hallows was sent to scour the pond the year the cellarer's ledger went missing. He was eleven, small for his age, and he thought the closed bud looked like a fist. Each morning he knelt on the flat stone and counted the petals, and each morning Brother Tobias watched him from the mill door with his arms folded and said nothing about the ledger.
On the ninth morning the bud split only halfway, and beneath it the water was clear enough to show the bottom. Wren saw a tin box wedged among the roots, its lid rusted shut. Inside were the missing coins and the last page of the ledger, swollen with wet but still legible, with a name that was not his and a sum that was. He carried it up the path without a word. Tobias took the box, turned the page over twice, and laid it on the bench in the sun.
"Keep kneeling," Tobias said at last. "The flower doesn't care who was wrong. It only opens for the one who looks." Wren went back down to the pond. The stem curled under the water like a question mark, and the dots of silt drifted slowly off the stone, the way seeds do when nobody is there to catch them.
