Lotus flower with swirling scrolls
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A bold black lotus flower with pointed petals sits at the centre of the design, with a stem and two long curling scrolls extending to the left and right. The linework is solid and mostly uniform, with no shading, and the design is photographed at a slight angle on a pale, textured paper background. Only black ink is used, and the composition is open and balanced around the flower.

The road over the pass was closed twice that winter, and twice Marta Oleksy walked it anyway, carrying salt and needles to the villages on the far side. On the third morning the snow had settled into a hard crust that held her weight. Below the col, where the stream ran black between the rocks, she found a lotus growing out of ice, which was foolishness, because nothing grows in ice.

She knelt and broke the crust with the heel of her hand. The stem came up through the frost, thin as a hair, and curled at the base into two long scrolls, one reaching left toward the ridge and one reaching right toward the valley. The petals were dark and pointed, like cut paper held to a lamp. She had heard her grandmother say that a flower in a bad place was a promise the mountain was making to someone who had not yet come back.
Marta did not pick it. She wrapped her scarf over the petals, tied the ends in a knot, and went on down with her salt. When she reached the first village the men were digging out the church roof, and the woman who kept the bread ovens asked her what she had brought. Marta told her the truth, that she had brought salt and nothing else, and the woman laughed and said that was the most useful thing a person could bring over that pass.
