Names, hearts and swirls script design
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A hand-drawn tattoo design showing the names Jonah, Tyler, Grace and Rose in cursive script, arranged around a large looping letter-like form. Small hearts and curling swirls fill the gaps and extend downwards from the centre. The design uses fine black linework with no shading or colour, shown on a pale grey background.

The lambing started the week the beck froze, and Ada Pell had only two hands and a lantern. Her son Jonah was nine and thought he was twelve, so she sent him to the big barn with the dog and told him to count the ewes out loud, because a counted ewe was a ewe that stayed where you put her.

Tyler came down from the top field at dusk with his gloves off and his fingers gone white. He said the gate to Hob's Wood had come off its hinge and the drift was over the wall. Ada told him to take the spade. Grace, who was seven and too small for the spade, went to the kitchen and wrote names in the frost on the inside of the window, the way her grandmother had taught her, a loop for each person who was out in the weather, so that the house would know where to look for them.
Rose was last. She came in past midnight with a lamb under her coat, still steaming, and a second one trailing behind on wobbling legs. Ada took the lamb and held it to the range. Rose sat on the flagstones and said the second one had come out of the snow on its own, following a line of dark marks in the drift that nobody had made. Ada looked at the window. The frost names had run down into long curling tails, and nobody had touched them since supper.
By morning the thaw had found the gate and the beck had softened. Ada never did work out whose footprints had led the lamb home, but she left the window alone all winter, and the tails went on growing in the cold, down toward the floor, until spring came and washed them away.
