A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The old black bird had been painted over the waiting room door by a stationmaster who believed gulls brought luck to a line that ran so close to the sea. By the time Tomas Reddy took the keys at Holm Crossing, the bird had faded to a smudge and the damp came through it in brown tongues. Nobody in the village liked to say the bird had been wrong. They only said it had flown off before the trains did.

That winter the drainage pond beside the sidings filled with rain, and in the spring a lotus opened on the black water, though no one had planted one. The porters said the seed had come in on the coal wagons from a far country. Tomas did not argue. He took his brushes and a tin of lamp black, and each evening after the last up train he painted the lotus across the boards, petal by petal, while the signal lamps hummed.

Old Mrs Pryce from the cottages brought him a string of dew-beads threaded on wire, one for every train that had ever run late through the crossing, and asked him to hang them under the bloom. He did. Each bead was a small grey weight of waiting, and when the wind caught them they chimed like a dropped chain of rail spikes.

The bird never came back. On the morning the new line opened, the first passenger to step onto the platform stopped under the door, looked up at the black petals and the dotted chain, and said nothing at all. Tomas found he had been holding his breath, and he let it go, and the bloom held.
