Mandala tattoo across the chest

Dotwork · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A symmetrical mandala design with a central flower, teardrop motifs, dots and scalloped edges sits across the centre of the chest. The linework is crisp and the dotwork and grey wash shading add depth to the petals and panels. The tattoo is shown in black ink against pale skin, with a hand at the top edge and a black strap at the upper right.

The officer unrolls the cloth on the steel table under the strip light, and you watch his thumbs find the centre first, the star of eight petals stitched in faded indigo. He is not looking at your face. He is counting the teardrops along the border and the dots between them like seed pearls, and you know he will lose count at the scallops, because everyone does.

"Wedding?" he asks. You say it was your aunt's, begun the winter her husband went to sea and finished the summer the ferry stopped running to the island. You do not tell him she never once drew the pattern on paper. She carried it in her head, the way some people carry a prayer, and she taught you by pressing your fingers onto the fabric: here the petal opens, here the drop falls, here you stop and breathe.

He folds back the corner, slowly, and you see the diamonds at the lower points, the ones she called the doors for the wind. Then his radio crackles, a lorry in lane six, and he stamps the form without another question. You roll the cloth yourself, tight, the way she showed you, the centre turned inward so the petals cannot catch.

Outside, the air smells of diesel and rain. You tuck the roll under your arm and walk toward the far gate, counting drops under your breath, and somewhere past the last barrier you lose count at the scallops and laugh, because she did too.
