Black and grey dotwork mandala tattoo centred on the chest below the breasts, with a navel piercing visible below it.

Mandala tattoo across the chest

Dotwork · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A symmetrical mandala tattoo sits centrally on the chest, with a dense circular centre and layered petal-like points spreading outwards. The design is built from fine dots and stippled shading, with bold outlines defining the outer petals. It is rendered entirely in black and grey ink against the skin, with the tattoo filling the middle of the frame.

Dear Ysolde, you will not believe what the Keeper of the Seal has given me to do. For three weeks I have sat in the cold vault beneath the Lotus Hall with a fine pen and a pot of lamp-black, placing dots. Thousands of them. The old mandala on the Seal of Orrenmere was pricked into copper by a hand nobody remembers, and each time it wears down someone like me must restore it, dot by dot, without once letting the stipple grow heavy. Master Helmu says a dot too dark is a lie told to the king.

Yesterday I finished the outermost ring and climbed the ladder to see it by daylight. The petals lift off the metal as if they are breathing out. Then I noticed the centre, the small tight whorl the first engraver cut deepest. It is not a rose or a sun. Counting the spokes, I found there are nine, and nine is the number of years the old queen was kept in the eastern tower away from her daughter. I had always thought it was decoration.

I showed Helmu. He went very quiet and then told me to go home and sleep. This morning the vault was locked, and a new apprentice was waiting at the door, a boy with clean fingernails and no questions.

I am writing this with my last good pen, so you will know I took nothing. I kept only the stipple dust that fell from my sleeves, and I left the centre as I found it, uncorrected. Let them find my dot there if they want a witness. Tell Mother the lamps are warm and the bread is better than hers, and do not, under any circumstances, tell her about the spokes. Yours in dots, Tobin
