Lotus mandala design with dotted lines

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

The drawing shows a lotus flower with layered petals, each filled with fine line patterns, and a central bud with concentric detail. Below the blossom, leaves fan outwards and a series of dotted lines forms a triangular geometric frame. The work is rendered in black linework on a pale background, with a balanced, symmetrical composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Teodor had pricked the lotus three times before the inspector came, and each time the holes drifted a hair to the left, as if the paper did not want to be a flower. He held the sheet to the window of the cutting room and counted the dots along the outer edge, twelve to a side, the way his father had taught him. The triangle was the difficult part. It had to sit exactly beneath the blossom, or the whole thing looked like a kite that had come down in the wrong field.

The pattern could not go by post. The customs men at the bridge opened every tube and unrolled every sheaf of paper, so Irena folded it into the lining of her coat, where the pinholes pressed against her ribs for the length of the queue. The officer on the far side was a young man with a streaming cold. He held the sheet to the lamp, saw a flower and a scatter of dots, and asked what it was for. "A roof," she said. "For a church that has been waiting a long time." He stamped it without looking again.

In the village the plaster had flaked from the nave ceiling in grey scabs, and the old men sat on the pews with their caps in their laps, watching her work. She laid the sheet flat, pounced charcoal through the holes with a cloth bag, and lifted it away. Seventy-one dots came up white on the damp plaster, a triangle of small stars above the altar.

Nobody spoke for a while. Then Teodor's brother stood, reached up with a brush, and began to join the dots with a thin line of ochre, and one by one the old men got up to help him.
