Black and grey dotwork lotus mandala tattoo with fine linework across the calf, above a black sock.

Lotus mandala on a calf

Dotwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A leg with a symmetrical lotus-style mandala tattoo sits on the calf, with a pointed central petal flanked by curved side petals. The design combines bold outlines with dense dotwork stippling that builds soft gradients in the petals. The ink is entirely black and grey, and the tattoo is centred on the leg against a pale skin tone and a wooden floor.

The pattern arrives in a brown paper parcel on a wet Tuesday, and Mr Aske lets you open it because your hands are steadier than his. Inside is a lotus pricked through card, its petals opening from a tight bud. You hold it up to the drapery window and count the points: twelve outer, eight inner. Nobody in Hollin Row has seen a lotus. They have seen chapel roses and the Co-op bunting, and they will buy whatever the Ashworth sisters tell them is fashionable.

All winter you prick copies onto cartridge with a bradawl heated on the range. The dots crowd thicker towards the centre and thin at the edges where the paper tires. Mr Aske says a pattern should be even. You keep going anyway. By February your eyes ache, and the sheet looks less like a flower than shadow spreading outward from one stubborn point.

The sisters come on the last Saturday in March with their bags of bobbins and a complaint. The lace worked from the pattern is grey at the centre, they say, not the white they paid for. You take the card from its drawer and hold it to the lamp, and the holes fall through in a gradient, dense as dusk at the heart and blown open at the rim, so the whole flower seems to be rising out of the paper. The elder sister touches one petal and goes quiet.

She buys the pattern that afternoon, and the next week a lace collar leaves Hollin Row with a lotus worked in grey at its throat. You keep the bradawl. Some evenings you still prick a dot or two in the margin of a spoiled sheet, just to feel the warmth of the point go through, and to see how the dark gathers where you pressed hardest.
