Geometric wrist band with mountain peaks

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A band tattoo wraps around the inner wrist and forearm, with a row of black triangular peaks above a solid bordered strip of diamonds and zigzags. Below the geometric band, fine stippled dots fade out across the skin. The linework is crisp and the image is in black ink against light skin on a plain pale background.

The chain ran out at the eleventh peg, so Maud sent me back for the second while she sighted the ridge through her brass. Rain had been coming off Scar Fell since dawn and the wind kept taking the pencil from my hand. The theodolite stood on three legs in the bracken like a heron that had thought better of fishing.

She had drawn the valley four times already, and every sheet carried the same band around its margin: a row of black peaks standing over a border of diamonds and zigzags, then a fall of dots thinning out across the empty paper. "The peaks are what we can see," she said, "the diamonds are what we agreed on, and the dots are the part nobody has walked." I took it for a fancy way of saying she had not finished. Then the man from the Ordnance office arrived with his own chain and found her figures exact to the width of a hair.

He wanted the valley shorter by a furlong, because a shorter valley meant a cheaper road. Maud did not argue. She took a fine nib, inked one more diamond on the cuff of her coat, and walked him up to the last peg where the dots began. She pointed past it, to ground where the stipple faded to nothing. "Measure there," she said, "and you will find the mountain keeps going." He measured. The chain sagged in the wet, and by dusk his figures had crept back to hers.

We packed the instruments by lantern. On the road down I watched the ink on her coat cuff run in the rain, the peaks blurring first and the dots last of all, still going on past the edge of the page.
