Lotus mandala on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A symmetrical lotus flower built from layered petals and fine ornamental linework sits centred on the upper back. Below the bloom, a vertical line of small dots and circles hangs down the spine. The tattoo is rendered in black and grey ink against the skin, with the back shown in soft, even light.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The snow had shut the Hawes road on the Tuesday, and by Thursday Ruth Carrow had the back parlour of the Lamb to herself, a candle, and a sheet of good cartridge paper pinned flat with two pewter cups. She was drawing a lotus she had seen on a Kashmir shawl that belonged to the landlord's late mother. She copied it petal by petal with a hard pencil, because a pattern that will be pricked and dusted has to be drawn true, or the powder goes everywhere.

Halfway through the third ring of petals, Tom Ashby came in stamping snow from his boots and asked whether she meant to eat the soup or just glare at it. She said she was checking the symmetry. He said the thing looked finished from the doorway, and she said the paper would be the judge of that, not him. She folded the sheet along the line she had ruled down its middle, and the two halves met like palms. He didn't say anything for a while.
Then she took the awl and pricked the centre line, one hole every finger's width, from the bloom down to the table's edge. "That's where it hangs," she said. "The dots carry it from one sheet to the next." Tom held the paper up to the window. Outside, the lane was a blank white field, and the pinholes caught the last grey light in a thin string of beads.
The plough came through at seven. Ruth rolled the pattern, tied it with green thread, and gave him the spare copy she had made. "Pin it by the door," she said. "Anyone who wants the middle can find it from there." He did. For the rest of that winter, every guest who came in out of the cold walked past a lotus with a dotted line running straight down to the latch.
