Mandala and dotwork chain across upper back
Dotwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman is photographed from behind, showing a black ornamental tattoo across her upper back and neck. A central mandala with a flower motif sits within a V-shaped panel, and a row of fine dotted chains hangs down from its edges. The work is in black ink and greys, with dense dot and line shading that gives the panel a lace-like texture against the plain skin.

Nell had pinned the last bobbin to the cushion at half past four, and still the collar would not lie flat. Her grandmother's pattern called for a V of lace that narrowed to a single rose at the point, and the rose kept puckering like a mouth pulled shut. She picked out six rows with a bodkin, her hands steady because they had to be.

The bride was due at the church hall by eleven. Nell had been commissioned in March, a long letter arriving with a sketch of a mandala drawn in fountain pen, and a request for small dropped beads along the hem so the lace would catch the light when the bride turned to face the room. Nell had sewn each bead on with a single strand of silk, counting under her breath the way her gran had counted stitches in the chapel pews.
Then the rose came right. She felt it before she saw it: the threads sat, the tension sang. She laid the collar across the table and the dotted chains swung out in their scalloped curves, like a row of pearls that had decided to fall.
Nell did not go to the wedding. She sent the collar in a flat box with a card that said only, Wear it where the sun can reach it. The bride would know what that meant. Nell went back to her cushion and started the next one, because lace was never finished, only handed on.
