Lotus mandala on the upper back

Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman's bare upper back shows a large black ink tattoo of an ornate lotus mandala, with layered petals and fine interior detail. A vertical dotted line runs beneath the motif, which is centred on the spine. The image is in black and grey, with soft natural light and the subject's face turned away from the camera.

Dear Ada,

The pattern came back from the mill with the centre gone soft, as if someone had breathed on it. Mr Hollis says the Jacquard card is at fault, and I have not argued, because arguing does nothing to a card. I have spent three nights with a lamp and a magnifier, picking out the lotus Father drew before the war, the one with eight petals stacked like a water lily opening under a cloth. Every layer wants the next one to sit exactly beneath it, and if one line slips the whole flower leans.

I have been thinking about the dots. You will remember the row of pinholes he pricked along the margin of every sheet, a little line of them running from the top of the flower down to the foot of the page. He said they were for the bobbins to find their way home. I used to think it was superstition. Tonight I counted them, nineteen in all, and I realised he had never once let a pattern leave the room without that trail, even when it was only a sample for a shop window.

The card is mended now. I laid the new punch over the old and pressed until my wrist ached, then ran the fabric through the frame and watched the lotus rise out of the mesh, petal over petal, clean at last. Mr Hollis came in with his hat still on and stood looking at it for a long time without a word.

I am sending you the offcut from the corner. Keep it somewhere dry. Tell Mother the lamp is working again, and that I have not stopped counting.

Love, Win
