Lotus mandala tattoo on upper back
Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman's bare back shows a symmetrical lotus mandala in black ink, with layered petals and fine stippled detail in the centre. A vertical line of dots runs above and below the motif. The tattoo sits centrally on the back against a plain, softly lit background, with the subject's head turned away from the camera.

The river had been low for three summers, and Mistress Ilse still would not let anyone touch the copper trays until she had counted the dots twice. Her apprentice, Pell, sat on an upturned salt barrel and watched her thumb move down the ledger.

The king of Ardenmoor wanted a lotus for the gate of his new bathhouse. He had sent word that it must match on both sides, so that a man walking in would see the same flower walking out. Ilse drew it in ink on linen. Eight petals, then sixteen, each ruled from the centre outward with a compass made from a goose quill and a bent nail. In the middle she stippled a small wheel of dots, so fine that Pell needed a bowl of water to see them properly.
Pell asked why the dots ran in a line above and below the flower, like a plumb line hung from the sky. Ilse did not look up. Those are the years, she said, the ones the river took and the ones it gave back. Count them with me. He counted nineteen above and nineteen below, and the line sat between the petals and the mud like a hinge.
When the king's men came for the drawing, Ilse folded the linen into a square and gave them a copy. The king unfolded it on his table and found it perfect. He never knew that the original had been pricked through with a needle, so that every dot was a small hole. When his steward held the copy up to the high window, the light fell through each pinhole and laid the lotus across the floor in gold. The king stood in that light for a long time. Then he sent for the river to be measured, and Ilse went down to the water with her nail and her stone.
