Black and grey lotus mandala tattoo with dotwork shading and hanging petal edging, placed on the chest beneath the breast.

Lotus mandala under the breast

Botanical · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey mandala tattoo with a central lotus-like flower surrounded by layered petals, arcs and small droplet shapes. The linework is fine and the shading uses stippled dots and hatching to build depth. The tattoo sits on the chest beneath the breast, and a partial second image of a similar mandala design appears on the right.

The rain had come through the canvas for nine days when Old Haskar decided the lamps would have to go. The Marrowby Brothers' Circus had been dying since the spring, one horse at a time, and now the last tent poles leaned like tired men. Nobody had paid to see the lotus in the centre ring for three seasons, but it was still there, painted in lamp-black and grey across the canvas above the sawdust, a flower whose petals opened down into little drops of water.

Haskar's granddaughter, Ilse, climbed the rigging with a bucket of size and a brush. She had been told as a child that the lotus grew in mud and opened only in the dark, so each year she painted the drops a little longer, as if they could carry the rain away. The old folk in the caravans said the flower was a door. Whoever counted its petals from the centre outward would find the road they had lost.

On the tenth night the rain stopped. Ilse counted the petals with a torch clenched in her teeth and found, on the eighth ring, a gap she had never painted. She filled it with a single drop, and the canvas drew tight over the poles with a sound like a held breath. In the morning the caravans were gone onto the road, and the lotus hung dry above the empty ring, its drops still wet at the points.
