Lotus with geometric lines on the side torso
Botanical · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A lotus flower is drawn in black and grey with petals filled by dense dots and fine patterned lines. Thin compass-style arcs, a circle and small dots extend around and below the flower. The shading is soft and controlled, and the design is centred on the skin with plenty of clear space around it.

Sit down, sit down, and mind the cat, she has no manners. No, the lamp was never the trouble. The trouble was Ada Penhallow's compasses, which she kept in a biscuit tin under the stairs and would not let the keeper's boy touch.

Every night she sat at the kitchen table with a pencil and drew the same thing: a flower that opened from the middle the way a lamp opens when the wick catches. Circles inside circles, arcs swinging out from one pin hole, and dots wherever the point had rested too long. The boy asked what it was for. She said it was for finding the way back, and that a flower knows the road home better than any sailor, because it turns to the light without being told.
Then the autumn the fog came in off the Sound and stayed nine days. The fishing boats sat on their moorings and the gulls stopped crying. On the tenth morning the boy found the tin open on the table and every petal inked in, dotted, filled with fine stripes until the paper was nearly black at the heart. Ada was gone down to the slipway with her coat thrown over her nightdress, and the fog had lifted just enough to show one thin line of light out on the water.
They say she found the bearing. They say she walked that circle with the compass point against the harbour wall, and the arcs told her where the rocks lay under the swell. I do not say it is true. I only say the boat came in that morning, and the tin is still under the stairs, and the compasses inside are warm to the touch if you are fool enough to hold them. Now the tea is cold, and that is the end of it.
