Love script, flag and eagle emblem on chest
Lettering · Chest · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows the word Love in flowing black script across the centre, with an eagle, globe and anchor emblem in black sitting within the O. It sits on a stylised flag made of red brushstroke-like stripes and a blue block with three gold dots, and a line of black lettering reads 1 COR. 13:13 beneath the script. The palette is mainly red, blue and gold with black linework, and the soft, painterly shading is set against bare skin on the upper chest.

The flag came in on a Tuesday, folded the wrong way, the way they always arrive when they have been carried in a kitbag for a long time. Ruth Harker smoothed it across the cutting table under the lamp and counted the stripes with her thumb. Seven red, six white, and a split along the hem where a boot had caught it. The note pinned to the corner said, in capitals, DON'T LET THE RED GO PINK.

She worked on it after nine, when the high street had gone quiet and the last bus had groaned past the shop window. Red was the hard part. Every dye lot she tried came out a shade too cheerful, so she mixed her own from a tin of madder and a drop of something she would not name to her sister. The blue canton with its three gold dots gave her more trouble. The dots were supposed to be gold, not yellow, and she had no gold thread in the cupboard, only a spool of brass-coloured silk her mother had bought for a wedding dress that never got made. She stitched each dot twice, the second pass following the first like a hand on a shoulder.
The hem was the last thing. She had sewn a small L into the corner the way a tailor signs a waistcoat, then sat looking at it for a long time. It was not hers to sign. She unpicked it with the point of the scissors, and the thread came out easily, as if it had been waiting to.
The parcel went into brown paper with the flag folded right this time, stripes outward. The post van came at seven. I left the lamp on a minute longer than I needed to, the way you do for someone still on the road.
