Lumos script and star on wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of the word lumos in handwritten lowercase script sits on the wrist, with a four-pointed star with a short sparkle at its centre to the right of the lettering. The thin, even linework is in solid black ink with no shading, against pale skin and a dark sleeve. The tattoo is centred in a close, straight-on crop with the rest of the arm softly out of focus.

Dear Mairi,

The wheelhouse lamp died again past the Stacks on Tuesday, so we ran the last four miles by the compass and Skipper's bad temper. Callum had the torch, but its battery was flat, and the fog was thick enough to chew. I stood at the rail with my hand over my eyes like a daft child, waiting for the harbour light to show.
Then old Ruaridh, who has not said a kind word to anyone since the spring of the big storm, pulled a scrap of card from his oilskin and held it up to the dead glass. On it, in his square capitals, he had written LUMOS, with a little four-pointed star drawn beside it in pencil. I thought it was a joke. He said, "Mind the pier, boy," and pressed the card flat against the bulb. The cabin filled with a dim grey glow that was nothing like proper light, but it was enough for the man at the wheel to see the swell coming.
We came in on it. Nobody spoke. Ruaridh pocketed the card and went to bed without his tea, and in the morning the lamp was dark again, as it always is.
I have kept the card. The star is the only thing on this boat that never needs charging, and I think of it every time we round the Stacks in fog. Write soon, and tell Dad the mackerel were no good this year.
Your brother, Ewan
