Compass arrow design on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of an inner forearm with a fine line tattoo of a compass. A thin vertical line with arrowheads at each end crosses a horizontal line with an arrowhead on the left, and each point carries a small stylised script letter. The ink is black and the lines are even and delicate, set against slightly warm, vintage-toned skin with a dark fabric background.

You find Priya by the coat rack at the Dunmore Road reunion, where you once hid from Mr Ashby's geography test with a stolen packet of Polo mints. She is turning something over in her palm, and you know it before she opens her fingers: the brass compass you carved your initials into on the Ravenscar field trip, the summer the mist came down so thick the teachers counted heads every ten minutes.

"It was in the lining of my old duffel," she says. "Needle still works. Sort of." The needle trembles, then swings slowly toward the far wall, where somebody has pinned a photo of the sixth form squinting into sunshine. Around the four points you scratched a letter with a compass tip: N for Nadia, E for Eloise, S for Sami, and W for you, though you never agreed whether it stood for Wren or for the word you added after it when you were fourteen.
Nadia is in Leeds now, running a bakery with a sign she won't let anyone photograph. Eloise sends postcards from Lisbon that arrive in July. Sami is somewhere you were never invited to ask about. You stand there with the compass warm in your hand and realise the arrow was never meant to find north. It was meant to show you which way the others had gone, and that you had been standing still by the coat rack all along.
