Lungs formed of branches with three birds

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

A symmetrical drawing of two lungs built from fine, branching twig-like lines that spread from a central trachea-like stem at the top. Three songbirds sit among the branches, one on the left lung, one on the right and one facing it at the centre. The linework is detailed with soft pencil shading, rendered in warm brown tones on a textured paper background.

The pear tree came down on the Tuesday after the frost, and by the Thursday Eli Marrow had stopped trying to sleep through the sound of the saw. He worked the timber yard behind Coldharbour Lane for his uncle, who sold firewood by the sack and never asked where a log had come from. The pear had been hollow at its heart for years. When Eli split the trunk he found the inside branched like a fan of pale sticks, each limb thinner than the last, and the grain at the ends shone wet as if it still breathed.

His sister Hester had been coughing since the mill closed, a dry rattle that worried the neighbours more than it worried her. Eli spent an evening with a knife and a bucket of sand, scraping the pear limbs until they were smooth and bone-coloured, then wove them into two loose shapes on the kitchen table, one for each side of her chest, the way a child might build a nest. He did not know whether it was nonsense. He only knew the wood wanted to be somewhere it could be useful.

Three birds came the next morning, two finches and a wren, and they found the frame before the sun was properly up. They hopped along the thin twigs as though it had always been there, and one settled on the crossbar by Hester's bed and sang at the window until she laughed at it. The coughing did not stop that week, but it loosened.

On Sunday Eli carried the frame out to the orchard and hung it from the one pear stump still rooted in the grass. The birds followed him. Hester stood on the back step in her coat, breathing slowly, counting them aloud. Three, she said, and then nothing more, because nothing more needed saying.
