Lavender sprig inside a circle on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A lavender sprig with a flowering spike and slender leaves is drawn in fine black linework, with light stippled shading in the flower head. A thin circle sits behind the stem, framing the botanical motif. The tattoo is shown in close view on a pale forearm, with a dark knitted sleeve and a textured dark surface in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lavender had gone over early that summer, and Maud spent the first morning of the drying cutting the spikes with her grandmother's bent scissors while the bees complained about it from the hedge. Her sister wanted the sprigs bundled for the wedding tables, tied with string the colour of weak tea, but Maud kept pulling out the thinnest stems and laying them on the wooden bench in a row, as if they were specimens and not decoration.

"You're sorting them like coins," said Ada, coming down the garden path with two cups and a plate of burnt shortbread. "Nobody will know the difference between a good sprig and a bad one from the back of the marquee."

"Mum would have known." Maud turned one over. The leaves were grey-green and narrow as needles, and the flower head had dried to a crowd of tiny pale buds, each one holding a little of the afternoon. "She drew these every August in the margins of the seed catalogue. Remember? Always inside a ring, like she was trapping them to keep them still."

Ada sat down on the end of the bench and sipped her tea. For a while neither of them said anything, and the bees went on with their grievance.

In the end they bundled eleven sprigs for the tables and kept the twelfth, the straightest, pressed between two sheets of greaseproof paper inside the atlas on the windowsill. Maud took it out again on the morning of the wedding, when the marquee was up and the florist had gone, and tucked it into the lining of her bag, where it would be safe from the heat and from everyone's good intentions.
