Lyric script with stars and moon on shoulder
Lettering · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo
A close photograph of a shoulder and upper back carrying a black script lettering tattoo set over four lines of text. A small orange and yellow star sits above the first line and a yellow crescent moon with an orange star sits at the lower right, with softly shaded edges. The tight crop keeps the text central, with dark hair and a hand with a coloured bracelet at the edges of the frame.

Dear Marnie, the lift in Ashgrove House has been dead since Tuesday, so I climbed all fourteen floors with the shopping bags cutting into my fingers, and I still couldn't stop thinking about the pear tree behind the bins. Don't tell me you've forgotten. You were the one who dug the hole with the bread knife while I held the torch that kept flicking off. Dad's cash tin went in with the things he'd never have wanted found, and we swore on Nan's rosary that we'd keep it between us until we were both in the ground ourselves.

Mrs Okafor from flat nine knocked on my door yesterday with a casserole dish nobody asked for. She wanted to know whether I'd seen the men with the white van hanging about the car park after dark. I said no. The lie came out smooth as butter, and that frightened me more than anything else has since the funeral. Afterwards I stood at the kitchen window and watched the new crescent moon sitting low over the flats, thin as a fingernail paring, and I thought how easy it is for a sky like that to look innocent.
I've moved the tin from under the sink to the freezer, behind the peas, which is stupid, I know, but it felt like somewhere nobody would open without a reason. Ring me Sunday. Use the phone box on Hollins Road, not your mobile, and don't say anything on the line you wouldn't want read out at the inquest.
Burn this when you've read it, the way we agreed. We always said we'd take it to our graves. I'm starting to think those graves might be closer than either of us planned.
Love, Jo
