Script quote with heart and wing on the side torso

Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A black script quote runs across two lines on the side of a torso, reading All that you need now is in your soul. A small solid heart with a wing or feather shape sits at the end of the second line. The lettering is in black ink with soft grey shading, and the photo is framed closely on the skin above light blue denim jeans.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, you lot, and mind the brazier, because the winter in Hallowmere is long and this story is longer. You want to know why the Queen's heralds wear no swords, only a folded brass wing at the collar? Then hear about Tobiah Crane, who was sent over the Grey Pass with a sealed letter and no horse, because the old king had run out of horses and patience at the same time.

Tobiah was a mapmaker's apprentice, all ink on his fingers and no courage in his boots. Halfway up the pass the snow came sideways and his lantern guttered out. He sat down on a flat stone to weep, as sensible men do, and a swift came down out of the white and perched on the toe of his boot. It was a small thing, black as a burnt match, with a heart knotted at its throat. Some say it was the last of its kind. Nobody in Hallowmere has ever argued the point.

Its wing had been broken by a hawk. Tobiah bound it with strips torn from his own shirt, and the bird, which had no reason to trust him, looked at him a long while before it sang a note so clear the snow stopped falling. Words came with the note, written in a hand like cursive frost: all that you need now is in your soul. Tobiah thought it a riddle. He got up and walked anyway, because the bird had stopped shivering, and that seemed a fair argument.

He reached the far gate by dawn with the letter dry against his chest. The swift flew off east, where nobody has ever been able to follow. The king read the letter, which said only that the bridge had fallen, and wept, and was never quite the same. But that is another story, and the fire is nearly out, so you will have to supply the rest yourselves.
