Made in England script above a Union Jack
Lettering · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows the words Made in England in bold blackletter script across the top, with a waving Union Jack beneath. The flag has soft shading that gives it a rippled, three-dimensional look, and its red, white and blue ink sits on lightly toned skin. The composition is centred and fills most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
At the reunion in the Bramwell village hall, the old needlework mistress, Miss Ada Pyle, asked for the flag to be brought out, as it had been every Friday of their schooldays. Nobody had one. Someone's cousin offered a tea towel. Frank Oddy, who had once stitched the red bands for her in the sewing room, said the cloth had gone to the jumble years ago, and that a flag was only cloth and a promise kept in the head.

Miss Pyle said nothing for a long while. Then she unbuttoned her cardigan and drew out a folded length of wool bunting that had been against her ribs since morning. The white had gone the colour of weak tea. Stitched along its hem, in black letters that bent like wet reeds, were the words Made in England, the way the school had marked every piece it sent to the Scouts' summer fete.
Frank took one end and the room took the other. They walked it down the length of the hall with the bunting lifting in the draught from the open door, and the old ones stood up without being asked, the way they had for the anthem in assembly. When the cloth rippled over the trestle tables, the lettering caught the light and every person there could read it plainly.
Miss Pyle folded it again and handed it back to Frank. Keep it dry, she said, you sewed the first stitch in it, and it has only ever been as good as the hands that carried it. Frank put it in his coat pocket, where it stayed warm until the taxi came.
