London skyline and Union Jack on chest
Chest · Mixed · Photo
A black silhouette of a city skyline, including a clock tower and a large wheel shape, surrounds a Union Jack flag at the centre of the design. The skyline is solid black with dark shading, while the flag is in red, white and blue with clean edges. The tattoo sits centrally on the upper chest, with a red top and blurred hair at the edges of the frame.

Before the bells of the big clock started, Nell Harrow lit the ovens in the back of a bakery on a street that ran down to the river. Her father had lit them before her, and his father had laid the brick hearth with his own hands, so the bread knew the rhythm of the house. Every morning she lifted the first tray out in the dark and set it on the sill, because that was the custom, and the gulls came down for the crusts.

A man came one winter with a handcart and a tin box of sketches. He wanted the city pressed into a loaf, he said, the whole skyline stamped into the dough before it went in the oven. Nell laughed and told him bread did not hold a picture. He insisted. So she carved him a stamp from a block of boxwood instead: a tower with a face, a great wheel turning over the water, and a small flag in the middle that she had dyed from her mother's old tablecloth, madder red and woad blue.
The first batch came out wrong. The flag bled into the crust and the wheel melted into a smudge. She kept trying all that winter, before dawn, pressing and baking and pressing again, until the spokes stood out clean and the stripes stayed sharp enough to read. The man never came back for the loaves.
Nell kept the stamp on the shelf beside the flour sacks. When customers asked what it was for, she said it was for keeping the time honest, and she set the first tray on the sill each morning as her father had, so the gulls would know the day had started.
