The flour sacks were delivered late again, so I was out front before the lamps were lit, sweeping the step with the sleeve of my coat pulled over my hand. A light was still burning in the window of the flat above the pawnshop. Someone was awake up there, bent over a table by the look of the shoulders. I raised a hand and they raised one back, and that small exchange got me through the first batch of rolls.

When the sun finally pushed grey over the rooftops, I took the last tray out with the good cloth and set it on the sill to cool. Mr Okafor came by, bought a single cob, and told me the loaves looked like they had been blessed. I told him they had been burned on one side. He laughed, and the steam from the bread curled up past the glass in the low light, catching the sun like something lit from within. I left the window open a crack after he went, so the smell would reach the street.
