Praying hands, winged cross and dove design

Black and grey · Flash

A pencil sketch of a tattoo design set against a pale background. Praying hands rise from the bottom, below a large shaded cross with feathered wings and a burst of rays, while a small outlined dove flies through clouds on the right. The shading is soft and grey, with dark edges on the cloud shapes and a tall, narrow composition.

Put the kettle down, boy, and listen, because I'll only tell it once before the watch changes. It was the year the Maudlin Rose lost her foremast off the Horn. Eleven days of cloud so low you could have hung washing on it, and the sea running grey as slate. The men were done in. Old Hennessy, the carpenter, knelt on the wet planks with his hands cupped the way his mother taught him, and the rest of us went down beside him, because there's nothing like a man praying to make another man feel he ought to try it too.

Nobody had the heart to say the ship would sink. We said the Lord's words badly, out of order, and the wind took half of them. Then on the twelfth morning a dove came out of the cloud. Grey as the sea, thin-cut, not a gull and not a petrel, a dove with its wings flat and its head turned north, as if it had an errand. It circled the ship three times and settled on the stump of the mast, close enough to touch.

Hennessy had a tin of biscuit crumbs in his coat. He never fed it. He just held out his palm, and the bird stepped on, and he walked it to the rail and opened his hands the way you'd let go a sparrow at a wedding. It went straight up through the cloud, toward a light none of us had seen in a week.

Two days later the cloud broke and we saw the coast of Chile like a thumbnail on the horizon. Hennessy never told anyone what he'd prayed for. He only said the bird knew the way home, and that was all the sermon he ever gave. So if you wonder why I keep my own hands folded at table, that's why. Now go and fetch the lamp.
