Matryoshka doll with rose, black and grey flash
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
A drawing of a nesting doll with a painted-style face, a patterned headscarf topped with a crescent moon, and a large shaded rose across its central body. Flowers and scrolling shapes fill the sides and the base of the doll. Bold black outlines and grey shading give the design a traditional flash look, shown on off-white paper.

The cloakroom at the Crescent Ballroom smells of wet wool and Brylcreem, and on Saturdays you work the hatch because your mother says the tips are better than the dancing. A woman in a headscarf with a crescent moon pinned to its knot has left her green mac with you three weeks running. Every time she says the same thing: check the lining pocket before you hand it back. You never do. Tonight she is late, and the band has started "Moonglow" for the third time.

When she finally comes down the stairs she slides her hand into the lining and brings out a wooden doll no bigger than a pear. It has a painted face, lashes like rowing oars, and a rose across its belly. She unscrews it without looking, and inside is another, and inside that another, until seven of them stand in a row under the bulb, each one smaller, like pawns that have been told to keep quiet.
"Each one kept a dance," she says. "Mostly his. He never once danced with anyone else." You want to ask which one is the last, but the seventh is a solid knob of pine with a single rose and nothing more. She presses the nest into your palm and tells you to give it to whoever takes over the hatch in June, because you have the look of someone who will leave this job and never come back for a coat.
After closing you hang the mac back on its hook and stand with the dolls in your coat pocket while the band packs away the drums. You fit them together one by one, the way she showed you, and when the last one clicks shut you find you are humming the first bar of "Moonglow" under your breath, turning slowly on the cloakroom lino with nobody to lead you.
