Magnifying glass with cross on forearm

Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A photograph of a realistic tattoo of a magnifying glass on the inner forearm near the wrist. The lens shows a black cross against blue and white tones, and the silver-grey handle has detailed scrollwork and a dark cast shadow that gives a three-dimensional effect. Soft shading and smooth gradients define the metal rim and handle, and the background shows a tiled floor and a chair.

The lens was the one thing Harrow would not let me carry. He wrapped it in a grey stocking and buckled it into his own pack, then unbuckled it again at Scarth Col and held it out to me with two fingers, the way a man hands over a live coal. "Read me the ridge," he said. "My eyes have gone to porridge."

The silver rim was dull where his thumb had rested for thirty years, and the handle still had its scrollwork, leaves and something like a dog's head worn almost smooth. I set the glass over the map and the contour lines swam up like thumbprints. Then, without meaning to, I lifted it and looked along the ridge. The cloud tore open over the far fell, and there on the saddle stood a stone cross, black against a sky so blue it hurt.

"It's not on the map," I said. "There's a cross on the map at Blackmoss, but that's three miles south." Harrow took the glass and looked a long while. "Old Tom's cross. It came down in the big snow of '61. Ashby's people set it up again on the wrong stone, and the Survey put it where they thought it ought to be." He gave the lens back to me. "Mark it where you see it, lad. Maps are only what somebody agreed to believe."

I drew it in pencil, exactly where the glass had shown it, and left the old ink cross where it was. That evening, folding the sheet, I found the lens had left a faint ring of silver dust on the paper, bright as a moon over the wrong place.
