A compass rose sits on the forearm with an arrow running vertically through the star, its feathered tail near the bottom of the design. The ring had gone missing somewhere between the church gate and the river, and by the time the sun dropped behind Hollin Fell half the wedding party was on their knees in the lane, feeling through the nettles. Old Tobiah Quarry stood at the stile with his hat in his hands and said nothing, because he was the one who had carried it.

Mara, the bride's cousin, had no patience for kneeling. She walked home for the compass her grandfather had left her, a brass case no bigger than a pocket watch, its needle worn thin from years of being turned in her palm. She set it flat on the stile and waited for the needle to settle. Then she followed the shadow of the lanterns north, past the byre and the well, to the ditch where the water ran under the hedge.
The ring lay in the silt with a crust of mud on it. Tobiah took it from her fingers and wept, which was the first time anyone in the village had seen him do so in forty years. "Your grandfather used to say a compass knows where a thing is, but never where it ought to be," he said. "That part is the work of people."
They married at first light on the bank, with the needle pointing at the sun as it lifted over the moor, and nobody mentioned the ring again except to say it fitted well.
