Small lamp post on the inner arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A small lamp post with a lantern at the top is drawn in thin black linework on pale skin. The post is a single slim line with a narrow base, and the lantern has simple outlined panels. The image is a close, plain photograph with the tattoo centred on the arm and no colour apart from the skin tone.

The lamp at the corner of Fenwick Row was the last one my uncle would let me light on my own, mostly because it stood outside the Palais and the Palais paid in tea and buns. Every Saturday I carried the long pole up from the cart at half past six, slid the brass hook under the glass, and coaxed the wick until the lantern took. The dance hall behind me was already thumping through its open doors, a gramophone running the same foxtrot over and over.

Mrs Dunning ran the cloakroom and kept a tin of gobstoppers under the counter. She said the lamp was lucky for courting couples, that anyone who kissed beneath it would stay together until the gas ran out. I thought it was nonsense until the spring a tall lad named Eddie Marsh waited under it every night for a girl called Ivy who worked at the mill and never once turned up at the door.
I watched him from the top of my ladder for a fortnight. On the last night he tipped his cap to the lamp, as if it were a person, and walked off into the rain. The next morning I climbed up to clean the glass and found a folded ticket wedged in the lantern's frame, a dance card with one name written in pencil, Ivy, and a time I could not read through the grime.
I did not tell Mrs Dunning. I took the ticket home, and on Saturday I lit the lamp early, at dusk, so that anyone walking past would see it burning steady and pale over the empty pavement. Some things need a light left on for them, even when nobody comes back to stand under it.
