Magnolia branch line drawing
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A single stem of magnolia rises through the frame, with a closed bud at the top, a smaller bud near the middle and several open flowers with layered petals. Broad oval leaves with clear veins extend to both sides of the stem, which ends in a short cut base at the bottom. The drawing uses clean, even ink outlines with no shading or fill, and the composition is centred on a vertical, tapering branch.

Dear Tom,

The magnolia by the back gate opened on Tuesday, three weeks early, which Dad says is the frost's fault and Mum says is the Lord showing off. I have been out there every morning since with my coffee going cold, counting. Eleven buds on the main stem, one that never quite made it, and the top one still shut tight like a fist with something folded inside. The leaves came through the same week, broad as a hand, the veins standing up so clearly you could copy them with a ruler.
Nobody in the village walks past the shop without stopping to look. Mrs Pargeter came out in her slippers and told me the old tree was planted the year the railway came, which I am fairly sure is not true, but I let her have it. The petals are thicker than I expected, layered like pages folded in on themselves, cream at the edges and a little bruised where the wind has been at them.
I have wrapped a cutting for you in wet newspaper and a sandwich bag, which Dad swears will never survive the post. It is only a few inches of stem with one bud on it, the one nearest the bottom that hasn't decided yet. Plant it in the yard in Perth and write to tell me if it opens. If it doesn't, we will know it was never going to, and you can stop waiting for a letter about it.
Love, Jess
