Magnolia tattoo on the inner forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A small magnolia flower in soft pink with green sepals sits at the end of a thin dark stem, with a closed bud beside it. The linework is fine and dark, and the petals are shaded with light pink washes that show some variation in tone. The tattoo is placed centrally on the inner forearm against a plain pale background, with the hand raised at the top of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The magnolia outside the old school came into flower a fortnight before anyone expected it, so the reunion had to be held under bare branches with pink cups already open above them. Ada Coyle had planted it the year the school opened, and the village still says that a magnolia opens first and takes the frost for the rest of the orchard. Nobody in the hall that evening believed it, but they went out to look all the same, forty-one of them, stiff in their good coats.

They talked about who had married whom and who had gone to Canada, and about the headmaster who once kept a boy in for a whole term over a stolen pear. Nobody mentioned Tomas Greaves, who had sat by the window and left the week after the exams without a word. Then the gate clicked and there he was, carrying a stem wrapped in damp newspaper, cut from a sapling he had grown from a seed pod pressed inside his atlas.

He held it out to Ada's granddaughter, who ran the cake stall, and she lifted it beside the open flower. The bud on the stem was still shut tight. 'That one's waiting for the frost to finish,' said Tomas, and nobody asked him what he meant, because every one of them knew what the village said about the first bloom.

They stood until the lamps came on in the hall. The bud was still closed when they went home, and Tomas wrapped the newspaper back round its stem so it would keep until morning.
