Small orange wildflower sprig on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A slender stem rises from the inner wrist with three orange-red blossoms, one pink bud and several leaves shaded in soft blue-grey and dark green. The linework is thin and delicate, with watercolour-like washes of colour that fade gently at the edges. The arm is set against a dark grey background, with a blurred orange plume at the right edge.

She knelt on the gatehouse steps with a sketchpad balanced on her knee. The stems were thin as wire, and the blossoms ran from brick-orange to a flushed pink at the centre, as if someone had dipped a brush in water and let the colour bleed out toward the petals. Beside them a pink bud was still closed tight. She drew it three times before she was satisfied, then sat back on her heels and listened to the rooks argue in the ivy.
The foreman, Dennis, came round the corner with two mugs of tea and a face like a shut gate. "They want the lot levelled by Friday," he said. "Your bit of the survey's done, love. Is it done?"
She looked at the sprig, at its soft blue-grey leaves fading at the edges into the paper, and thought of the report on her laptop, which listed the north wall as unstable and the flowers as nothing at all.
"Give me until Friday," she said, and took the tea.
