Pink rose with stem on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A small pink rose in soft, delicate linework sits at the top of a thin stem that curves down the inside of the wrist, with three leaves in green, yellow and orange tones. The shading on the rose petals is gentle and the stem is drawn in fine lines, giving a light, airy look. The wrist is shown in close focus against a blurred red knitted sleeve and warm background.

You reach the col at Ardcombe just before the snow, the mule's halter rubbing a raw line across your palm and a twist of wet paper buttoned inside your coat. Halvard, the old carrier, told you the rose had grown out of the scree below the cairn for longer than anyone remembered the road being cut. A single pink head on a stem as thin as a bootlace, he said, and nobody had ever bothered to climb that far for something so stubborn.

You kneel in the shale and dig with a tin spoon until the root comes up in a ball of grit. The stem bends like a question mark in your fingers. Three leaves: one still green, one gone the colour of marigolds, one the rust of an old nail. You wrap the roots in sacking, tuck the bundle against your shirt, and urge the mule down the switchbacks while the light thins to pewter and the wind starts picking at the cairn's loose stones.
At the inn at Lower Tarn, the landlady, Mairead, reads the letter you carried over the pass and goes quiet over it. Her sister left the valley twenty years ago after a quarrel about a garden gate, and neither of them ever wrote the first word. She takes the rose from you without speaking, fills a jam jar from the pump, and sets the stem in it on the sill facing the road.
In the morning the petals have opened another finger's width. From the lane you can see the lamp still lit in the window, and the rose leaning toward the pass as if it expects someone to come back over it.
