Mandala and lotus forearm tattoo
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo covers the forearm, built from layered mandala-style ornaments with a central heart-shaped motif, lotus-like petals and a band of dotted lines. Fine stippled dots and clean linework create the shading, with a vertical stem ending in a flower near the wrist. The arm is photographed against a dark background with a light grey t-shirt sleeve above the tattoo.

Mona pinned the last panel of lace to the cutting table and counted the dots again. Mrs Okafor had asked for a hundred and eight, one for each bead on her late mother's rosary, and Mona had reached ninety-six before the band started up in the ballroom below, playing the same foxtrot it had played every Saturday since the pier was rebuilt.

The dance hall at Herne Bay smelled of brass polish and wet wool. Through the floorboards came the thump of heels and the laughter of girls who had never once been told to sit still. Mona had come up from Canterbury at seventeen to sew costumes for the summer revue, and she had stayed, because the workroom sat above the sprung floor and the warmth rose through the boards like a second pulse.
On the Saturday the pattern came right, Mrs Okafor climbed the stairs in her good coat. She laid one hand flat on the lace and said nothing for a long time. Then she asked Mona to sew a heart into the centre, a shape like the bud of a water lily, with petals folded inward as though holding something back.
Mona stitched it through the night. At dawn she lifted the finished panel to the window and watched the light pass through the lace, scattering small grey stars across the floor. Below, the chairs were stacked and the hall was empty, and for once nothing moved in the room but the dust.
