Mandala and lotus hand tattoo with finger chain

Dotwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand shows a black ornamental tattoo with a large mandala and lotus-like flower at the centre of the back of the hand. A fine dotted chain runs from the flower up towards the fingers and down to a small triangular motif near the wrist. The design uses fine linework and stippled dots in black ink, and the skin around it is unmarked, with silver rings and grey nails in the frame.

The snow had been falling since the Tuesday, and by the third night the innkeeper's daughter had stopped apologising for the cold. You sat by the bread oven with your boots steaming and watched Marta unroll a sheet of vellum across the scrubbed table. She weighed its corners with the salt cellar, the pepper pot and a tin spoon, then uncapped a bottle of iron-gall ink that smelled of vinegar and old pennies.

"My grandfather drew these when the passes closed," she said. "He said a circle keeps the wind from getting a grip."

He had filled the page with flowers within flowers, each petal cut from a finer petal, each ring pricked out in dots so small they looked like frost on glass. At the centre sat a lotus opening into a dozen points. From its base a line of dots ran away to the edge of the paper, and at its end a small black triangle waited like a signpost. Marta tapped the triangle with the spoon.

"That is the col," she said. "Where the path comes over. Whoever walks it in the morning must count the dots, one step each, and not look up."

You followed the chain with the tip of a pen that night, while the wind leaned on the shutters and the lamp burned low. Forty-one dots. At forty-one the flame guttered, the door shuddered open onto a white dawn, and there in the new snow ran the tracks of the road over the pass, clean and straight as a stitched seam.
