Concentric circles on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A row of interlinked circles with concentric rings and small dots runs along the forearm. The circles are drawn in fine cream-toned linework that stands out against the shaded background. The blue, teal, green and orange swirls behind them create a loose, painterly wash that fills the composition edge to edge.

The reunion was held in the old gym at Thornmere Grammar, because nobody had ever got round to knocking it down. Mags Pelham came in first, carrying a tin of shortbread and a folded sheet of paper she would not let anyone touch. It was a letter, she said, from the year they were eleven, when Mr Oddy had told them to write to the people they expected to be at forty. Nobody had opened theirs. Hers was sealed with a dot of red wax.

Inside were rings, one within another like the cut end of a tree, with small dots set on their edges and thin lines joining each ring to the next. Mr Oddy had said each ring was a word, each dot a full stop, and the lines the grammar holding it all together. Nobody had ever read it, so they had laughed and put it in a drawer. Colin Brisk, who had become a land surveyor, carried the paper to the window and turned it slowly in the light, tracing the lines with a bitten fingernail until the rings began to look like a route.
"It's a map," he said. "The field, the pond, the big beech. Stand on the centre ring and the dots say walk three paces east." They went out into the car park in their good coats, past the bins and the place where the beech had been. Colin's paces brought them to a cracked paving slab with a small circle stamped into it. Mags knelt, prised up the corner with a car key, and found a tin rusted shut. Inside was a folded note in childish capitals that said only: YOU ARE STILL ON TIME.
