Mandala crescent moon on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large circular mandala covers the forearm, with a crescent moon at its centre containing a small hand-like motif. The geometric petals, radiating lines and dotted shading are rendered in fine black linework, with tonal stippling in the outer ring. The ink is entirely black and grey against lightly tanned skin, and the composition is framed by a dark background and a partly visible torso at the left edge.

The tide had already turned when Ada reached the slip, and the boats were leaning on their ropes like dogs at a shut gate. Her father was crouched over the net bag, feeling for the knot he had tied the night before, the one that took two fingers and a short prayer. She had brought the lantern down because the moon was too thin to light the steps, and because her mother had said, not for the first time, that the sea did not care who asked it nicely.

Above the breakwater the moon sat on its back like a bowl holding water. Someone had hung a pale palm inside it, the open hand the old skippers painted on their prows to say stop, not yet, and its rays spread across the harbour in fine dark lines. Drops fell from the bottom of the nets, one, then another, each catching the lantern light before it struck the stones. Ada counted them the way she counted stitches, because counting kept her hands busy.
Her father stepped down into the Mary Jane and the boat dipped, then steadied, the way boats do when they agree to something. He held out his palm to her, the same open shape as the one in the moon, and she did not take it. Instead she unhooked the bow line and let it slide into the black water, slow and deliberate, so he would have to wait for her to decide.
He laughed, a sound she had not heard since spring, and said all right, then, bring her in on the morning tide. Ada stood on the slip until the last lantern was a point of light beyond the wall. Then she walked home, and found the rope had left a pale line across her palm, like the mark on the moon.
